Seismic Micro-zoning and GIS Studies for the Yalova Settlement Center Objectives: To collect seismologic, geologic and remote sensing data required to determine the potential earthquake risk and the related seismic hazard in Yalova Region, to collect new data when required, to accomplish total analysis and interpretation of all the data and to present all the generated information under a Geographic Information Systems. Anticipated Results: The project results will be used generally by all the public and private organizations concerned with the earthquake risk. After the 17 August, 1999 Kocaeli earthquake, the increasing public sensitivity let the local administrations take the initiative to create databases against the earthquake hazard. The data and the results generated by the project will greatly contribute to engineering studies such as settlement area planning, seismic reinforcement and structural design. Particularly, regional determination of ground amplification factor will provide information on which area will be affected in which extent in a future occurring earthquake and thus let the engineering and earthquake disaster planning measures be taken beforehand. All the information generated for the project will be imported into a GIS and information will be retrieved and queried in a modern system. Besides, important experience will be acquired to determine the earthquake risk for the existing or planned large industry facilities, electricity power plants, dams or settlement areas for a long period. Duration: 25.11.2003 - 30.09.2005
