The second meeting of the EU FP7 Pre-earthquakes Project was held at Antea Palace Hotel, Sultanahmet, Istanbul between November 17-18, 2011.
This event was organized by the Earth and Marine Sciences Institute (EMSI) of TUBITAK Marmara Research Center. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sedat Inan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erhan Alparslan, Ömer Sarıkaya and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ergin from EMSI hosted this Project meeting. Mr. Mahmut Baş, the Director of Earthquake and Ground Survey Directorate of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality honored this meeting by giving a presentation on “Studies Carried out in Istanbul Facing an Earthquake Disaster”. Other participants were the following:
UNIBAS (University of Basilicata – Italy), which is also the project coordinator,
DLR (German Space Agency – Germany),
FIAG (Fiodorov Institute of Applied Geophysics, Russian Federation),
RSS (Russian Space Systems),
GSI (Geospazio Italia s.r.l. – Italy),
IZMIRAN (Pushkov Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radio wave propagation of the Russian Academy of Sciences Western Department – Russian Federation)
EC Project Office, Brussels - Belgium
CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research - SEMEP Project Coordination – France).
The second workshop of Black Sea Hazard Network EU FP7 IRSES Marie Curie Project was held in Tblisi, Georgia between September 12 and 16, 2011.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erhan Alparslan, Dr. Vedat Ediger and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ergin from the Earth and Marine Sciences Institute of TUBITAK MRC participated in this workshop hosted by the Project Partner from Georgia besides many other researchers from Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Ukraine, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
There were a number of presentations made in the workshop on earthquake's forecasting possibilities; seismicity and climate change correlations along with various discussions and researchers from different organizations in different countries got together to develop new cooperation and projects between the partner organizations.
The next workshop of the Project will be held in Turkey during 5-9 December, 2011 with the organization of the Earth and Marine Sciences Institute of TUBITAK-MRC.
VISITED
Prof.Dr. Vitaly Starostenko, the director of the Institute of geophysics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU), visited our institute on September 27th 2011. Both parties has agreed upon bilateral scientific cooperation for conducting earthquake studies in the Sea of Marmara. In this regard a bilateral research project proposal has been signed and submitted both in Ukraine (DKNII, The Ukrainian State Agency for Science, Innovation and Informatization) and Turkey (TÜBİTAK).
"SITE CLASSIFICATION AND SEISMIC RISK ASSESSMENT" PROJECT PROTOCOL WAS SIGNED BETWEEN BURSA METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY AND TUBITAK-MRC AIMING DETERMINATION OF THE SITE STRUCTURE OF BURSA PROVINCE AND THE EARTHQUAKE RISK.
In the project, which took a start by the protocol signed at December 2, 2010 between Bursa Metropolitan Municipality and TUBITAK Marmara Research Center, the behavior of the site will be evaluated from earthquake risk point of view in the priority areas within the provincial boundaries of Bursa with the purpose of determination of earthquake safe settlement suitability based on macro-zoning principles.
The fault zones that may generally pose a threat on the city and the structure of the determined deep bedrock will be investigated using geological and geophysical data collected during the three years of the Project, Earthquake scenarios will be created and seismic risk studies will be carried out. Assessment of seismic risk before big earthquakes enables the most accurate and effective engineering, disaster planning and management measures to be taken in order to reduce the earthquake damages at a minimum level. Data and maps created during the project will be a reliable information source to investigate every other result from other projects and measurements done within Bursa provincial boundaries. Due to studies that will be carried out based on internationally approved measurement techniques and standards, an experienced team on site classification and earthquake will emerge in Bursa Metropolitan Municipality.
Using "Generic Mapping Tools (GMT)" giving examples
"Generic Mapping Tools (GMT)" package is used in mapping and graphic drawings not only in earth sciences applications but also in other scientific and engineering areas. A one day training on using this package was given at TUBITAK-MRC Gebze Campus Conference Hall on December 24, 2010.
