HISTORY

Materials Unit was first established in 1968, in ITU campus and Chemical Engineering Research Unit in 1973, in its present location. In 1991, Environmental Research Group was separated and named Environmental Engineering Department.

In 1996, Material Technologies, Chemical Engineering and Food Department constituted Materials and Chemical Technologies Research Institute, MCTRI. Again in 1996, Chemistry Department of Basic Sciences Research Institute, first established in 1983, became a member of TÜBİTAK MRC. In 1997, Food Department was separated from MCTRI and carried out its activities as an another institute.

Finally, in October 2004, within the reorganization of MCTRI, Materials Institute MI is founded by separation of Chemistry Department from MCTRI and Chemistry Department is transformed into Chemistry and Environmental Institute with Environmental Department, which is separated from Energy Systems and Environmental Research Institute.
