The 4^th International Congress on Food and Nutrition and the 3rd SAFE Consortium International Congress on Food Safety will be held on 12 - 14^th October, 2011 at the Istanbul Convention Centre in Istanbul, Turkey.  The joint congress will also be held in parallel with two FP7 events (MycoRed and SAFETechnoPACK).

Kick-off meeting of the TARAL 1007 type project named "Development of Functional Instant Tea and Its Health Effects" was held on 29^th April 2011 in ÇAYKUR /Rize.

The theory and practice of color measurement of food products by using image analysis was presented to participants from food industry with a workshop held at TUBİTAK MAM Food Institute facilities on 25^th of March 2011. The workshop was organized in collaboration with TUBITAK MAM Food Institute, Aygenteks Ltd. and Verivide Limited (UK). The participants were mainly from bakery, white-good and biotechnology industries. The workshop was organized in two parts where theoretical background of color measurement and image processing was presented in the first part and in the second part practical applications were carried out on the samples that participants brought with them.

The workshop related to the 'Fluidised Bed System' which is bought as the part of the project named 'Production of Industrial Enzymes for Feed Industry' and supported within the scope of the 'Support Programme for Research Projects of Public Institutions TARAL 1007' has been organized by TÜBİTAK MRC Food Institute. The customer corporation of this project coordinated by TÜBİTAK MRC is the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Turkey. The workshop was realized successfully by the contributions of Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH Weimar/Germany, Karbomed San. ve Tic. Ltd. Şti., Ak-kim Kimya San. ve Tic. A.Ş. and the participations of food (PAKBIOMER, Ak Gıda San. Tic. A.Ş, Aromsa A.Ş. ) and pharmaceutical (İbrahim Ethem Ulagay İlaç Sanayii Türk A.Ş, Novartis Sağlık, Gıda ve Tarım Ürünleri Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş.) industries and related departments of the universities. The aim of the one-day workshop was to supply theoretical and practical information related to different industries and create a network within the sectors. The participants were informed about drying, granulation, agglomeration, coating and encapsulation processes, different process types and industrial application areas of these process types in 'Fluidised Bed System' during the workshop.

TUBITAK 1st INTERNATIONAL FOOD AND NUTRITION CONGRESS
FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY THROUGH THE FOOD CHAIN
WAS CONDUCTED SATISFACTORILY

1st International Food and Nutrition Congress on Food Safety and Quality through the Food Chain, was held on 15-18 June, 2005, Istanbul, Military Museum by the organization of TUBITAK MRC Food Institute (FI).

Congress opening speeches were conducted by FI Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Güner Özay, Director of European Commission DG Research Dr. Christian Patermann and Acting President of TUBITAK, Prof. Dr. Nüket Yetiş.

Congress aim was to establish a platform where relevant institutions/companies gathered to discuss scientific and technological issues such as high quality and safe production methods, processing technologies, process innovations, nutrition and health relations of foodstuffs, traceability, as well as to publicize national/ international scientific and technological developments, and to share knowledge.

Food quality and safety have been specified as the primary concern of the European Union, and are subject to intense scientific studies with the integration of developing countries. On the other hand, participation of Turkey in EU projects for these subjects has not been at the desired level. Taking into consideration this situation, Congress main subject was selected according to the EU FP6 thematic priority area. By that way, establishing a platform where relevant scientists and industry in Turkey and abroad gathered to develop and improve collaborations before the last call of the EU project proposals. This was another aim of the Congress. European Commission and European scientists showed a big interest to attend the Congress. Director of European Commission DG Research participated in the Congress and gave a conference on 6th Framework Programme Overview and 7th Framework Programme.

Participation and interest in the Congress were much higher than the expected, there were totally 580 participation form Turkey and abroad. Congress gained a real international characteristic from the point of attendees coming from the outside (Belgium, Norway, Denmark, UK, Island, Poland, Greece, Ireland, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Hungary, Italy, Ukraine, Spain, Germany, Finland, USA, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Algeria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Swiss, Czech Republic, Israel, Croatia, Latvia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria, South Korea, Malaysia). In addition to these, representatives from FAO, EFSA and INC participated in the Congress and contributed to the scientific programme by their conferences. Congress programme included conference, oral and poster presentation, and panel sessions. Congress topics were: New trends in food technology and preservation, food safety, legislations, food biotechnology, organic and low input foods, food additives, residues and pesticides, functional foods, food, nutrition and health, food regulations and standards, method of food analysis, detection and control.

There were also some project meetings for ongoing EU FP6 projects during the Congress. There were also company stands for advertising of the products/services in the food sector in the Congress. Public information day was also conducted on 18 June, 2005.

According to the participant questionnaire, Congress was evaluated very satisfactorily and requested to repeat it in every two year under different topics.
